flurry

downtown the people bustle
from one building to the next
to escape the harsh january air
all coming to a halt at this light
huddled at the crosswalk we wait
gathering together till it's our turn
and the mass exodus to elsewhere begins

there's hoodie with beats by dre
and pale blonde with blunt haircut
throng of suits with key cards fluttering
stroller pusher with mouth wagging
we push on together against the wind
an unlikely cluster of terse resolve
determined to get across the street

then we dissolve as quickly as we gathered
off to jobs, malls, appointments, homes
passing stars spinning to other constellations
well, i hope your destination is warm
i hope you find time to laugh with another
and look out a window while sipping tea
i'm glad we made it across the street together
